Providing your TFN

Make sure you provide your Tax File Number

Providing your Tax File Number (TFN) to your super fund is one of those small things that could really make a difference in the long run.

If we don't have your TFN, your contributions may be taxed at 45% plus 1.5% Medicare Levy. That's more than 30% higher than the standard rate!

We also won't be able to accept any personal contributions, and in turn this may affect your eligibility for the Government Co-contribution Scheme.

And whilst you don't have to supply your TFN, it is one of the best ways to help track your super. You can search for lost super using your TFN via the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.

How do I register my TFN?

Choose any one of the below options.

  • Online
Log in or sign up to Member Online Services. This service is easy, free to register and available 24/7.
  • Phone
Call 1300 651 331 to speak with one of our friendly customer service team members between 8.00am and 10.00pm AEST, Monday to Friday.
  • Post
Simply download a TFN Notification Form, complete it and mail it to us.

Taking care with your TFN

Accountants Super is authorised to collect your TFN under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 and your TFN will only be used for lawful purposes. These purposes may change in the future as a result of legislative change.

It is not an offence not to quote your TFN. However providing your TFN to Accountants Super will have the following advantages (which may not otherwise apply):

  • your superannuation fund will be able to accept all types of contributions to your account/s and the tax on contributions will not increase
  • other than the tax which may ordinarily apply, no additional tax will be deducted when withdrawing superannuation benefits
  • it will make it easier to trace superannuation accounts in your name in future.

Unless you request in writing that your TFN not be disclosed, a TFN may also be disclosed to another superannuation provider when your benefits are being transferred.
